Episode25
Scarlet Lipstick
Saint Just is in the clock tower. She remembers the day when her mother
took her to visit her father, and she saw Fukiko for the first time.
Flashback: Fukiko is knelt in the garden, in tears. She turns and sees
Rei, and thinks she's the daughter of one of the maids. She makes Rei sit
next to her, and tells her that she was given the worst seat at the birthday
party she had gone to. She had run away, very humiliated. She makes Rei
promise she'll never tell this story to anybody. When a maid sees Fukiko
and asks her why she's there, Fukiko gets on her feet and proudly says
she didn't feel well and left the party. Rei was deeply moved by Fukiko's
sudden change of attitude, by her pride and sense of honour, and never
forgot those feelings. Fukiko has always been in her heart... Rei couldn't
imagine that Fukiko had fallen in love with Henmi, and felt such a deep
and intense love for him...
Rei is leaving the clock tower, and meets Nanako at the entrance. She smiles and greets her, Nanako says that she has looked for her and she has tried to phone her many times. She was worried because she hasn't seen Saint Just since the birthday party. Rei asks if there's something special Nanako must tell her, and then waves bye. While Nanako follows her, Monna Lisa and Oshino stop her, and say that Miya-sama wants to meet her in the room Kisaragi at 8 pm. Rei is listening not far from them, and protests, saying that it's a strange time for a meeting. But the older gils seem to ignore her. Then they all leave. Image of Fukiko who cuts a flower and puts it in an ikebana composition...
During the class of sewing, as usual Kaoru seems to have some problems...
Mariko laughs, then she notices that Nanako is worried. Nanako explains
that she can't go to the cinema with her and Tomoko that evening, because
Miya-sama asked to meet her at the Sorority house. Mariko is perplexed
because of the unusual time.
In the meantime, Tomoko is changing her shoes near the lockers, and
Rei appears, asking her about the relationship between Henmi and Nanako.
Kaoru is playing basketball, she sees Rei passing by and asks her to play the next match. Rei tells her that Nanako knows Henmi because she was one of his students at the juku, and she writes to him like to an "older brother" to tell him what happens to her. "Isn't she cute?", Rei asks, giggling. Kaoru says that she's not related to all this. Rei says: "If you think so...", and leaves.
While Nanako is at the cinema with Tomoko and Mariko, and realizes that maybe the movie is too "adult" for her, Takehiko receives and unexpected visit. Rei is outside his door, and she staggers, it seems she took a lot of pills and is clearly upset. She tells Henmi that she has many questions to ask him. Takehiko invites her to come in, but Rei realizes that talking to him she might compromise Fukiko's honour. She runs away, leaving a perplexed Takehiko behind.
Nanako leaves the cinema and reaches the Sorority House. She comes inside
the Kisaragi room, and finds Miya-sama, who asks her to sit next to her
on the sofa. Fukiko has a showy scarlet lipstick on her lips. She comes
closer to Nanako, takes her hand and applies some lipstick on her lips.
Fukiko tells Nanako that she'll become a beautiful woman in a couple of
years. "Don't go round with Takehiko Henmi any more.", Fukiko adds. Nanako
explains that things are not how she thinks.
The younger girl tries to escape, but Miya-sama embraces her and confesses
that she loves her. "I've loved you since the welcome ceremony!", she says.
Fukiko kisses Nanako's right earlobe. "Forget Takehiko!", she whispers
in her ear.
Before it's too late, Rei rushes inside the room, slamming the door.
A terrible thunderstorm begins, and the light goes out. "Leave this room!",
Fukiko screams. "Where has your pride gone?", Rei asks, angry. Saint Just
explains that Fukiko wanted Nanako in the Sorority because she's in love
with Henmi; she wanted to control Nanako to keep her away from him. "But
I won't allow you to go on, and sink so low! Even if I have to use the
the force!", Rei yells. Fukiko tries to deny this truth, but then she runs
away.
Nanako can't believe her ears, and tries to follow Fukiko to know more,
but Rei stops her. It's raining really hard, and Rei asks Nanako which
earlobe Fukiko kissed. Nanako tries to escape, but Rei finally kisses her
right earlobe, which has still traces of Fukiko's red lipstick.
Nanako walks in the rain. She's really sad and disappointed, and thinks
she has no right to be in the Sorority...
In the clock tower, Rei cries, asking Fukiko to forgive her. "The more
I think of you, the more I hurt you...", she says, taking more pills.
Fukiko is in her car, and she's disgusted, because someone discovered
her secret "treasure".
At home, Nanako has a shower and then receives Tomoko's call. Tomoko tells her the story of the movie they were watching at the cinema, while Nanako still thinks about all the events of that evening. Nanako asks Tomoko to end the call. "I'll feel better tomorrow... or maybe the day after tomorrow...", she says. Tomoko says bye, with tears in her eyes since she understood that Nanako is suffering.
At the country house, Fukiko orders everybody to leave her alone and
climbs in her "secret room". She locks herself inside and breaks everything,
cursing in tears against who destroyed her treasure...
In the morning Nanako writes a letter to resign from the Sorority.
During the English class, Mariko asks Nanako what happened after she
left the cinema to go to the Sorority, but Nanako hides everything. She
runs to find Miya-sama, but the senior members tell her that Miya-sama
has a cold and she's in her country house.
Nanako meets Kaoru, who asks her if she saw Rei. She wanted to ask
her to play a basketball match.
Nanako sits next to the small lake in the school garden, and thinks
that Saint Just is the one who suffered the most, because she's so close
to Miya-sama and discovered that she loved Takehiko.
In the clock tower, Rei is sitting, close to her usual pills. She remembers
that after the death of her mother, the Ichinomiyas had decided to take
care of her and make her live in their home. Rei had followed Fukiko in
a trip to the north, to see together the snow.
On a beach covered with snow, Fukiko talks about her collection of
glass-made objects. "They were perfect, but once one of them was broken,
and I destroyed all the others. I couldn't bear that my treasure was soiled.
There's only one way to make this moment between us last forever, and to
make it perfect.", Fukiko explains. Rei nods, and Fukiko cuts Rei's wrist
with a razor.
Back to the present, Rei looks at her wrist (she took the bracelet
off). Then she looks at Fukiko's silhouette on the wall, and runs against
it, screaming in pain and anger, and hitting it with her fists several
times...
It's evening. Nanako phones to Saint Just. The receiver is lifted, but
Rei lies deeply asleep on the ground. Nanako decides to go to Rei's apartment
and to cook something for her.
She finds Fukiko in the elevator, and the two quarrel. Miya-sama orders
Nanako to go back home and get out of her way. Nanako insists she wants
to stay, she's not obliged to obey her orders, and gives Fukiko her letter
of resignation. Miya-sama throws it away. "Go away, I'll take care of Rei,
there's no place for you in her heart!", Fukiko says determined. Nanako
says that if it weren't for her interest Rei wouldn't even remember to
eat! "You did nothing for her!", Nanako yells. Fukiko slaps her hard.
In the meantime, Rei opens the door and runs to the elevator, while
Fukiko and Nanako call her...
Saint Just walks in the city alleys, and she finally stops, remembering what she felt after Fukiko had cut her wrist: she thought that Fukiko would join her soon, and waited, feeling the snow falling around, hearing Fukiko's breath and feeling relaxed as her body temperature was dropping. After she had lost consciousness Rei had woken up in hospital, and Fukiko was standing next to her bed, looking at her wrist...
Two criminals appear and try to rob Rei, but the girl reacts and they
have a fight...
Rei lies down, defeated, and her jacket is now partly ripped. She gets
on her feet and walks, thinking again about her past. After the accident
she had decided to live alone. Once she received Fukiko's visit: her older
sister gave her the doll, so she could be indirectly close to her, and
then the bracelet as a token of the promise that one day she would suicide
with her. Fukiko asked Rei to wait for her, and Rei promises it.
Rei is now at the top of a skyscraper. Flashback: Fukiko is embracing
her in front of a fireplace. Fukiko says that they have different mothers,
and she cannot bear the difference between them. "But one day I'd like
to see the snow with you again...", she said.
"You wanted to die with me, and then you hadn't the courage to follow
me, and left me alone..." Rei thinks. Images of Fukiko, dragging unconscious
Rei in the snow, desperately calling for help.
A plane flies above Rei, who turns and sees Fukiko. Fukiko says that
Rei shouldn't feel betrayed, because she's the most important person in
her heart. Rei laughs bitterly and says she doesn't believe her. She proposed
her to suicide because of her love disappointment with Henmi, and involved
her too.
Fukiko climbs on the balustrade, and says that this time she'll be
the first to die. Rei climbs close to her, and takes her hand. She says
she'll believe her just one moment before smashing on the ground. Fukiko
closes her eyes and... jumps, but Rei grabs her from behind and pushes
her on the floor. The two sisters lie down, Rei holds Fukiko tight, asking
her to forgive her, she won't ask her anything any more, Fukiko showed
her how much she loves her. Fukiko eyes are open wide, in disbelief and
shock. She finally lets out a piercing cry...
Rei goes back home, exhausted. She finds Nanako waiting for her, the girl prepared her a soup. Rei looks surprised at Nanako, who has waited for her and thought to cook her something for dinner. "But now I must leave...", Nanako says going to the door. Rei eats silently, but when Nanako is close to the door she asks: "Would you be willing to die? If someone you love asked you to die together, would you do it?". Nanako's eyes open wide, and she clasps her hand close to her heart. "It's absurd! Crazy! I never thought about anything similar! It's an horrible idea! Don't do it! You don't have to! I can't lose you, I can't!" Nanako cries, falling on her knees in tears. Rei is silent, with her head bowed. When Nanako says for the second time "I can't lose you!" her eyes opens wide, surprised and moved, and tears form. "Thanks...", she says, while a tear falls down her cheek.
A train passes.
One week later, Nanako receives an unexpected visit from Mariko in
the evening. She asks her to sleep at her home that night, and says that
her parents know about it. Nanako accepts, and Mariko is happy, because
she can sleep in the same bed with her. But in the middle of the night
Nanako wakes up, hearing that Mariko is sobbing. She turns and Mariko embraces
her, seeking comfort...
The next morning, Mariko and Nanako arrive at the train station. Tomoko
arrives too, and asks why Mariko is there. Tomoko is a bit jealous because
Mariko slept at Nanako's home...
At Seiran Aya is training at fencing. At the end of it, she looks out
of the window and sees Tomoko, Nanako and Mariko arriving. A wicked sneer
forms on her face...
Mariko seems thoughtful and before going to the classroom with Nanako
she makes a telephone call. She finds the answering machine at his father's
home.
In the classroom, Aya, Furuta and Sonobe provoke Mariko and Nanako.
Mariko finds a note on her desk, where it's written: "Porno-writers fulfil
their fantasies". Mariko stands up and grabs Aya's hair. Kaoru arrives
and stops her. Aya says that in any case Mariko will have to leave the
Seiran...
During lunch break Mariko, Tomoko and Nanako talk in the garden. Mariko turns and explains with a smile that her parents decided to divorce. She says that it's not the end of the world, it's a common thing. Men aren't reliable, and, after all, she'll receive a lot of money for the alimony... Mariko throws a stone at the water and Nanako notices the difference between Mariko, desperate at her home the previous night, and Mariko now, smiling and acting as if nothing had happened.
At the end of the lessons, Mariko goes to a phone booth, and smiles
to Nanako and Tomoko who are waiting for her outside. She talks to her
father, and asks to see him, but her father says he's very busy. Mariko
hides her disappointment and invites Tomoko and Nanako to do shopping.
Mariko buys several things, among them a wonderful dark dress. The
three girls stop at a café, and Mariko offers to pay. She sees his
father in the same café, and reaches him. Mr. Shinobu tries to explain
her something, but then Mariko sees that at his table there's also his
lover, and runs away. Tomoko and Nanako follow her.
It's evening now, and Mrs. Shinobu warmly greets Mariko coming back home. She says she was not worried for her, because she knew that she was at Nanako's home. She also says that she felt alone without her. Mariko says that she saw her father and his lover. Her mother stops. Mariko yells at her, saying she would like her to react, that she hears her cry in the night in secret. Mrs. Shinobu starts crying, and Mariko yells that she mustn't cry, she must stop. Then she runs upstairs in her room, and starts breaking several objects. She notices a pencil-sharpener...
A dark room. Sound of the blade of the pencil-sharpener coming in and out... Mariko is on her knees, she's going to cut her wrist, but the bell rings: Nanako and Tomoko are there to give her back the dress she left at the café. Mariko embraces Nanako in tears, thanking her...
Nanako decides to try to help Mariko in this difficult moment. The next
morning at school, Aya shows Mariko a scandal-mongering newspaper showing
a picture of her father and his lover on the title page. After a series
of cruel remarks - about Mariko who will be forced to leave the Sorority
and maybe the Seiran - and despite Nanako's attempts to stop Misaki, Mariko
loses control: she grabs the pencil-sharpener and cuts Aya's arm. When
she sees her own blood, Misaki screams because of the pain. Kaoru
arrives. Mariko is in a sort of trance, everybody looks at her. She looks
at Kaoru, and is only able to say: "I'm very sorry..." She repeats it,
and then runs away, apologizing above all to Nanako.
She walks shocked on the street, and arrives on a bridge. She stops
and looks at the view of the city. Takashi is passing by in his car by
chance, he sees her and stops.
Again, the sound of the blade coming in and out is heard: Mariko's
eyes open wide, hallucinated. She tries to jump down from the bridge, but
Takashi arrives and stops her just in time. Mariko screams...
Mariko's mother is told about the events by the school managers. They
say that Aya's wound isn't serious, but such a violent event had never
occurred in the school history...
Nobody can find Mariko, who is in Takashi's car. The boy is carrying
her around with him.
At school everybody runs Mariko down. Nanako and Tomoko are worried
and decide to look for Mariko. Mrs. Shinobu appears and asks them what
caused Mariko's reaction. She understands that this happened because of
the divorce and says that the assistand headmaster suspended Mariko until
they take a decision. Mrs. Shinobu says she's going to find Aya
at home. Misaki eventually comes back to lessons the same afternoon...
Nanako and Tomoko keep looking for Mariko.
At home, Mrs. Shinobu phones her husband. She tells him she needs to
speak to him, but he says he's in a hurry. However, before closing the
phone, he hears that his wife is trying to tell him something about Mariko...
Nanako is running out of school with Tomoko, but two senior Sorority members stop them and tell Nanako there's an emergency meeting of the club, because Mariko's accident damaged the Sorority reputation and they must take a decision. Nanako quickly says she can't go, and runs away with Tomoko...
At a café, Furuta and Sonobe are talking about Mariko and say she'll probably be kicked out of Seiran. Aya seems thoughtful and says that their chattering only increased the pain in her arm...
It's sunset. Mrs Shinobu calls her husband again, but his lover answers
and says he's not there. Mrs. Shinobu starts crying, but somebody rings
at the door: it's Mr. Shinobu, who asks her what did she need to tell him
about Mariko.
In the meantime, Nanako and Tomoko are on the beach, and continue their
search for Mariko. They understand that she's experiencing a very difficult
moment...
It's evening. Near the harbour Takashi offers Mariko some hot dogs.
Mariko refuses them, but her stomach grumbles, and Takashi gently teases
her. Mariko finally eats. Takashi asks her where she wants to go now, after
the places they have already visited in their long ride by car.
After a while, Takashi phones at Mariko's home, while the girl sleeps,
exhausted. He says that they had a long ride by car, and that Mariko feels
very guilty for what she did to Misaki. Everybody at home is relieved,
Mr. Shinobu is very grateful to Nanako and Tomoko, his hands tremble while
he lights up a cigarette...
Mariko comes back home, and everybody welcomes her warmly. The girl
is surprised to see her father. Tomoko and Nanako, after Takashi leaves,
decide to stay at Mariko's home and sleep there. Mariko is grateful.
Mr. Shinobu reassures Mariko about Misaki's health, because he got
to know the girl feels much better. Mariko asks him what he's doing there.
These are not his business, he shouldn't play the part of "good father".
She screams that they are liars, and that her own existence is the result
of a lie. She would only like to disappear... Mariko runs upstairs, and
Nanako and Tomoko follow her.
They found Mariko lighting up many candles in her room. She says she
collected them to lighten up her special moments with her parents... but
her father was never with her. "Today is a special day. There's the final...
it's the last day of life!", she says, and sets fire to the courtains.
Tomoko and Nanako stop her in time, Mariko runs down the stairs, and finds
her father. Mr. Shinobu tells her to have respect for herself, invites
her to see the positive aspects of her character, to love herself. Mariko
in tears says that she hates herself: she's selfish, evil, vicious and
cynic. Her father slaps her. He admits that he does a disgusting job, surrounded
by slander. "But I love my family, and I want to remedy my mistakes...
How can the others love you, if you don't love yourself? And how can you
love the others, if you don't love yourself?", he says.
"But I can love, because despite everything I still love you so much...",
Mariko tells her father, crying. They embrace, both in tears, and her father
asks her to forgive him.
On the train home, Nanako thinks about the sad fact that, even if they love each other, Mariko's family is falling to pieces. She wonders why this must happen...
At the Sorority meeting, Miya-sama announces the results of the meeting
of the senior members: "Mariko Shinobu is expelled." Nanako can't believe
it, and suddenly stands up - a vase with flowers falls on the ground -
and protests the decision is unfair and cruel. They should listen also
to Mariko's version.
All the Sorority members are surprised by Nanako's attitude, Miya-sama
says that Nanako has the right to defend her friend, but the decision is
"final and irrevocable". Nanako walks towards her, and says that they have
no right to condemn Mariko, they are all students of the same school, and
they must stop it! They are a group of spoiled and arrogant girls who can't
decide of the others' destiny! Do they believe they are goddesses on Earth?
Miya-sama is impassive and invites Nanako to continue talking, despite
the other member's offended reaction.
"I want to leave the Sorority!", Nanako says. Fukiko can't believe
her ears.
"And *this* is a final decision!", Nanako adds. A bird breaks the coloured
glass walls of Seiran. Nanako leaves, very resolute...
